In the spring of 2021, a dedicated group of parents with daughters passionate about curling embarked on a mission. Their goal was to establish a community where young girls who share a love for curling could connect. Recognizing the distinct challenges faced by girls in a traditionally male-dominated sport, these founders sought to create a platform that facilitated connections among Girls Who Curl and their parents and coaches.
The inaugural "Girls Who Curl" event took place in 2021, marking the commencement of an annual tradition. These one-day events, held each spring, including on-ice coaching, social time, prizes, games, and lunch. Parents play an integral role in helping their curlers to succeed. Parent discussions and education are offered which are aimed at navigating the landscape of junior competitive curling. Our events provided the ideal backdrop for both curlers and parents to forge meaningful relationships which are necessary for competing.
The growth of "Girls Who Curl" has been remarkable, transforming from a fun idea into a vibrant and thriving community. This effort has enabled teenage girls and their parents to establish connections, offer mutual support, and discover empowerment within the sphere of curling. As the legacy of "Girls Who Curl" continues to evolve, so does the legacy of empowered and inspired junior curlers, poised to shape the future of the sport.
What started as a humble initiative has now blossomed into a thriving organization called "Junior Curling Connection" where we now encompass all junior curlers. Our mission endures – to advance and elevate junior curling as a whole, building upon the foundation laid by "Girls Who Curl."
Our board members are: Corinne Swatzina (St. Paul Curling Club), Mike Olson and Chris Johnson (Four Seasons Curling Club), Patty Thompson (Fargo Moorhead Curling Club), Kristen Hines (Subzero/Chaska Curling Center) and Karen Dundore (Rice Lake Curling Club).
